Fetal Medicine

Also called Maternal-fetal Medicine is a subspecialty of obstetrics requiring extra training of the OB/GYN doctor. It is dedicated to the diagnosis and management of pregnant women and their unborn child.

It focusses on:

  • Detection of malformations, infections, trisomies, and other genetic diseases
  • Detection of placental disorders and fetal growth
  • Monitoring of twin pregnancies and their complications
  • Screening for pre-eclampsia and prematurity.

There is a wide range of possible examinations. The most modern techniques of invasive and non-invasive diagnosis, high-resolution 2D, Doppler, and 3D-4D ultrasound are available at our centre.

Our maternal-fetal medicine specialist Dr. Grant offers personalized monitoring of your pregnancy, whether it be a low or high risk.

A crucial examination at the beginning of pregnancy, the ultrasound performed between 12 to 14 weeks of gestation, allows us to determine the estimated due date, have a first impression of the fundamental structures of the fetus, and, depending on individual preferences, perform screening for chromosomal abnormalities. On a case-by-case basis, additional investiagtions may be proposed.

From 20 weeks of gestation, the development of the fetus’ main organs can be evaluated.

Also called morphology scan, the aim of this ultrasound is to detect possible anomalies.

In case of suspicion of genetic abnormalities, it is possible to opt for an analysis of the fetus’ genes by aspiration of amniotic fluid (amniocentesis) or biopsy of the placenta (chorionic villus sampling).

Our specialist in maternal-fetal medicine will guide you to make the best decision.
