Compulsory health insurance (AOS) covers, among other things, the costs of specific maternity services. These services include check-ups during and after pregnancy, a contribution towards the cost of antenatal classes, childbirth, necessary breastfeeding advice, care for healthy newborns and their stay in hospital with their mothers, as well as midwifery services, including postnatal care (Art. 29, para. 2, LAMal<\/a> and Art. 13 to 16 OPAS<\/a>). <\/p>

The insurer may not require any cost sharing for specific maternity benefits, without any time limit (Art. 64, para. 7, let. a, LAMal). Similarly, the AOS covers the costs of benefits and care in the event of illness provided from the 13th week of pregnancy, during childbirth and up to eight weeks after childbirth, without any contribution towards the costs (Art. 64, para. 7, let. b, LAMal). <\/p>

Specific maternity benefits also include pregnancy check-ups, including any tests prescribed in this context, which are carried out before the 13th week of pregnancy. Check-ups are diagnostic measures. As soon as a complication requires therapeutic measures, such as the prescription or dispensing of medication, this is considered treatment and is no longer regarded as a specific maternity benefit, but as the diagnosis or treatment of an illness. As explained above, these therapeutic measures during pregnancy, whether due to a complication of pregnancy or unrelated to it, are only covered without cost sharing from the 13th week of pregnancy until eight weeks after delivery. However, during the period up to the end of the 12th week of pregnancy, co-payments must be made for therapeutic measures and treatments, including prescribed medication. <\/p>

\u2018Vaccinations are preventive measures (Art. 12a OPAS) and not specific maternity benefits or sickness benefits.
