Contraception

Why am I experiencing bleeding while taking the pill, outside the pill-free week?

If the pill is not taken at the same time every day, it can disrupt your menstrual cycle — even a delay of 30 minutes can have an impact.

Why do I have bleeding during the first week of a new pill?

Your body needs about three months to adapt to a new pill before things stabilise. It’s important to take the pill at the same time every day.

I forgot to take my pill — what should I do?

Combined oestrogen-progestin pill:

  • If the delay is less than 12 hours: take the missed pill as soon as possible.
  • If you have missed two or more pills, or if you have taken the pill incorrectly during the seven days before the missed dose, please contact our reception.
  • If the delay is more than 12 hours: take the missed pill as soon as possible and contact our reception for further advice.
My period is late — what should I do?
  • A delay can occur even if your cycle is usually regular. Stress and emotional factors can influence it.
  • Take a pregnancy test to rule out that possibility.
  • Keep in mind that it’s normal to have periods about 9 times out of 12 in a year.
  • Monitor your next two cycles; if the delay happens again, please contact our reception.
What symptoms are normal after an IUD insertion?
  • Abdominal pain or cramps similar to period pain
  • Spotting for up to 3 months (sometimes up to 6 months with hormonal IUDs)
  • Heavy bleeding for a few days after insertion, which should gradually decrease
What symptoms are not normal after an IUD insertion?
  • Persistent lower abdominal pain despite taking Dafalgan and Irfen
  • Heavy bleeding that doesn’t stop
  • Very heavy flow (heavier than your normal period)
  • Fever or chills
  • Foul-smelling discharge
When should side effects disappear after a hormonal IUD or implant insertion?

It can take up to six months for your body to fully adjust to a hormonal IUD or implant. Side effects may persist during this time — patience is important.

My partner feels something during intercourse after IUD insertion — what should I do?

It’s likely that your partner is feeling the IUD strings, not the IUD itself. This can happen at first because the strings are a bit stiff. There’s no need for an urgent check; this can be assessed at your post-insertion check-up, usually six weeks after insertion.

My partner feels something during intercourse, and I’ve had my IUD for several weeks or months — what should I do?
  • Please contact our reception to schedule a check-up.
  • The IUD may have shifted. Please contact our reception to schedule a check-up. Use condoms until your appointment.

Gynecology

I feel a burning sensation when urinating or pressure in my lower abdomen — what should I do?

Please contact our reception to schedule a time to come in for a urine test. Based on the results, we will provide a suitable prescription, which you can collect at your pharmacy.

I have itching (internal and/or external) or vaginal discharge — what should I do?

Please contact our reception so we can determine the cause. Depending on the findings, we will either issue a prescription for appropriate treatment (to collect from your pharmacy) or schedule a consultation with your gynaecologist.

I have a lot of white discharge (including during pregnancy) — is that normal?

Is it normal to bleed during early pregnancy (7–8 weeks)?

  • Know your blood type — if you are Rh-negative, contact our reception.
  • If you haven’t yet had an ultrasound confirming that the pregnancy is intrauterine, contact our reception.

I can’t feel my baby moving as usual — what should I do?

Drink something sweet or eat a glucose tablet. If you still don’t feel any movement within 30 minutes, contact our reception or the hospital emergency department.

I’m pregnant and my belly becomes very hard — should I be worried?

No, not if it lasts less than 20 minutes and happens no more than 2–3 times a day. If it’s more frequent or persistent, contact our reception.

I’m pregnant and have had continuous contractions for 20 minutes that don’t ease with magnesium or Dafalgan — what should I do?

Please contact our reception to determine whether medication or a consultation with your gynaecologist is needed.

I’m pregnant and ate something unsafe (unpasteurised cheese, undercooked meat, poorly washed salad, etc.) — what should I do?

Please contact our reception to schedule an appointment with your gynaecologist and a blood test.

Can I dye my hair or get gel nails during pregnancy?

Yes, there are generally no contraindications if you have already used these products before pregnancy.

Can I go swimming or to thermal baths while pregnant?
  • Swimming is allowed during pregnancy. Avoid staying in the water for long periods — take regular 15-minute breaks outside the pool.
  • Avoid hot baths, as steam and heat can cause dizziness or fainting. Take regular 15-minute breaks outside the pool.
  • From 36 weeks of pregnancy onwards, avoid bathing altogether due to infection risks.
Can I use alternative therapies during pregnancy?

Yes, from the 13th week of pregnancy onwards. Always inform your therapist that you are pregnant. Examples include massage, acupuncture, and reflexology.

Can I exercise during pregnancy?

Yes. Avoid contact sports, extreme sports, and high-intensity activities. Listen to your body and rest when needed.

What’s the difference between an annual check-up and a preventive screening?
